Ex-Lightning forward Ryan Malone gets tryout deal with Wild

Former Lightning forward Ryan Malone will go to training camp with the Wild this month on a professional tryout offer with an eye toward getting an AHL contract so he can play in next year's Olympics for the United States, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

Malone, 37, has not played in the NHL since the 2014-15 season with the Rangers. He played six seasons for the Lightning, from 2008-14. He was bought out after an April 2014 arrest in Tampa on DUI and cocaine possession charges. Malone pleaded no contest to the DUI charge and agreed to a pretrial intervention program for the cocaine possession charge.

The NHL has said it won't allow its players to compete in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea, but players on AHL deals will be allowed to go.

Malone won a silver medal with the United States in 2010.
