Captain's Corner: Try bottom fishing as water clears

Cold blustery weather has hampered fishing this week. It will take few days for the water to clear due to the intense high winds. Anglers venturing out might want to try bottom fishing. If you want to catch hog snapper, this is the perfect time since they seem to eat better after a cold front. Muddy water doesn't stop them from rooting around the bottom looking for shrimp or crab bait. We started catching a few more red grouper recently, which is optimistic for spring fishing. We were running deep the past few months since inshore action was holding gags, but their season is closed in our region until June. Recently, we noticed some baits stacks huddled to the bottom in 80-90 feet of water. Recent reports prove that red grouper are migrating toward us from the deeper waters of 115 feet.

    TAMPA —- Whenever the Bucs play a home game, Sankar Montoute is on hand to supervise more than 50 officers from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on duty at Raymond James Stadium.

    Sankar Montoute, who oversees Homeland Security for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, was a replacement player for the Bucs during the 1987 strike. 
Montoute, who had a sack and interception in the same NFL game, oversees the 50-plus officers who work at Bucs games, most of whom have no idea he played. [Times files (1987)]
