Meet Winifred, the 140-pound baby rhino at Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens has a new bouncing baby rhino, a girl named Winnifred, who at 3 days old weighs 140 pounds.

And she will grow quickly, gaining as much as four pounds a day, said Peter Black, a senior veterinarian at the Tampa theme park.

The name Winnifred is Afrikaans for "white" or "fair." Native to the southern part of Africa, the white rhinoceros is the largest of the five species of rhinoceros, so Winnifred can be expected to weigh more than 3,000 pounds as an adult. Although the white rhino species is growing, they are still threatened to risks like poaching, mainly for their horns, Black said.

Winnifred was born Wednesday at the theme park to Kisiri, a 20-year-old rhino. You can see the family in the park's Serengeti Plain.

  1. Seasoned cast scores an extra-base hit for St. Petersburg Opera with 'Faust'

    Stage

TAMPA — Charles Gounod's Faust sets the table early. The world-weary philosopher immortalized in a dramatic poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is in his study, lamenting his state of affairs. He's willing to give away everything he has to be young again, even his soul.

For those who saw Taylor Trensch grow up in Tampa, his rise from promising student to star is heartwarming and entirely predictable. In January, Trensch, 28, will be moving into the title role of Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, one of the hottest tickets in theater.
