Art Planner: Kenwood Artists' Tour and Donne Bitner

Creative enclave: Kenwood Artists' Tour

Among the pockets of creativity in St. Petersburg is the Historic Kenwood district, where many artists have settled to live and work. They've formed a group called the Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood, and a few times a year they open their studios to the public. The March artist tour happens Saturday-Sunday, the theme being "Artists at Work." The self-guided tour takes you through the exhibits of 19 artists, including D Yael Kelley, Dianne Caton and Steven Kenny, whose work is pictured. You'll find a variety of artwork, including painting, ceramics, sculptures and jewelry. There will be live demos through the tour, including a lost wax casting demonstration by Barbara Lewis and Laura Lewis Albright, at 2 p.m. Saturday at 2501 Second Ave. N. The free tour runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Find information and a map at kenwoodartistenclave.org.

Donne Bitner: inner visions

Orlando-based artist Donne Bitner works in paintings and monotypes, a selection of which will be on display at Clayton Galleries in Tampa, opening Friday. Her paintings are what she calls "imagined landscapes," meaning that she draws on her memory to create them rather than working from a reference. Her technique of layering textures creates a hazy, dreamy effect that makes them seem as if they might disappear if you touched them. She captures mother nature's colors with such precision that one can almost feel the warmth of the sun or the breeze on your skin. Get lost in her world and meet Bitner at the free opening reception on Friday from 7-9 p.m. at 4105 S MacDill Ave. The show will remain on display through May 27.     Sometimes, the more time you have with a project, the more complicated it gets. I started hearing about Mortar & Pestle in Seminole Heights about 18 months ago. It was the vision of Ujwal Patel, a pharmacist;
