NOTICE OF DATA INCIDENT
Brooksville, Florida – Hernando County Board of County Commissioners (“Hernando County”) announces a data incident that may have impacted individuals’ information. On or around March 30, 2024, Hernando County became aware of unusual activity on its network and immediately began an investigation. The investigation determined that limited information maintained on Hernando County’s network may have been copied by an unauthorized actor between March 18, 2024, to March 30, 2024. After undertaking extensive efforts to review the information potentially involved to determine the type(s) of data contained within and to whom that information related, Hernando County determined that information related to a limited number of individuals was potentially involved. That information likely varies by individual but may include name, Social Security number, driver’s license/other state identification number, and passport number. Upon discovering this incident, Hernando County notified law enforcement, changed network passwords, and reviewed its policies and procedures. Hernando County is also offering potentially impacted individuals’ access to credit monitoring and identity

Individuals are encouraged to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing credit reports/account statements and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity and to detect errors. Individuals may also place a fraud alert or credit freeze on their credit report by contacting the credit reporting agencies: TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289, www.transunion.com; Experian: 1-888-397-3742, www.experian.com; Equifax: 1-888-298-0045, www.equifax.com. Instances of known or suspected identity theft should also be reported to law enforcement, the state Attorney General, and the FTC.
