For the Residents of San Remo Subdivision
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
The Hillsborough County San Remo Public Water System has levels of
Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) & Haloacetic Acid 5 (HAA5) Above Drinking Water Standards
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results from September 2025 to May 2026 show that our system exceeded the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for TTHMs and HAA5. The standard for TTHMs is 80 µg/L and the standard for HAA5 is 60 µg/L. Compliance is determined by averaging all of the samples collected at the sampling location for the past 12 months. The levels of TTHMs and HAA5 averages at our system’s sampling location for the last four quarters were 92.8 µg/L and 69.6 µg/L, respectively.
What should I do?
• There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
What does this mean?
This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours.
TTHMs are four trihalomethanes and HAA5 are five haloacetic acid compounds which form when water disinfectants react with natural organic matter in the water.
People who drink water containing TTHMs and HAA5 in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and have an increased risk of getting cancer
What is being done?
The County has implemented some treatment plant and operational practices to lower the levels of disinfection byproducts in our system and is working with the Hillsborough County Department of Health on the best long-term solution to reduce the levels of disinfection byproducts, specifically TTHMs and HAA5, within the system. The County will continue to monitor the disinfection byproduct levels in the system to measure the effectiveness of our system’s changes.
